LCSH Watch: Week 50, December 16, 2009.
150 Animated films [May Subd Geog] [sp 85088032]
* 450 UF Animated videos [EARLIER FORM OF HEADING]
(C) * 150 Animated videos CANCEL [sp2003004835]
* 682 This authority record has been deleted because the heading is covered by the subject heading Animated films (sh 85088032).
Also Documentary (and other types) films vs. videos. I'm not sure how I feel about this. Is it another Fan magazines subsuming Fanzines debacle, or is it okay?
* 150 Canvassing CANCEL [sp 85019831]
* 682 This authority record has been deleted because the heading is covered by the subject heading Door to door selling (sh 99004280).
(C) 150 Door-to-door selling [May Subd Geog] [sp 99004280]
* 450 UF Canvassing [EARLIER FORM OF HEADING]
Though it doesn't hurt me to the core the say the Fan Magazines vs. Fanzines debacle does, I think this change is a mistake, too. I was a canvasser for a nonprofit in college, and while we were I guess selling memberships in our organization, I wouldn't put our objective on par with peddling vacuum cleaners. There's also political canvassing, where you're really just trying to get the word out, and don't they call it canvassing on cop shows when they go door to door to see if anyone heard or saw anything about the alleged crime?
(C) 150 Climate change mitigation [May Subd Geog] [sp2009009655]

Mitigation. I guess that's a start. But not really. Not that I blame LC for this one.
(C) 150 Coffee cozies [May Subd Geog] [sp2009009486]
450 UF Coffee cosies
450 UF Cosies, Coffee

* 053 GT6060 (Manners and customs) CANCEL
* 550 BT Peddlers and peddling CANCEL
* 550 BT Street vendors
I love this. No warrant in the authority record, though, disappointingly.
(A) 150 Eleven Thousand Virgins (Legendary saints) [Not Subd Geog] [sp2009009545]
450 UF 11,000 Virgins (Legendary saints)
450 UF Holy Virgins of Cologne (Legendary saints)

" …11,000 virgins developed from the veneration of some nameless virgin martyrs…" 11,000 nameless virgin martyrs. Ugh.
(A) 150 Internet in evangelistic work [May Subd Geog] [sp2009009357]
550 BT Evangelistic work
I applaud LC on adopting a useful term fairly quickly, but how is evangelical outreach online a more firmly established concept than Femmes?
(A) 150 Multicultural services librarians [May Subd Geog] [sp2009009500]
053 Z682.4.M85
450 UF Diversity services librarians
550 BT Librarians
Good one, LC. And by the way if you like this heading, you might like to attend the National Diversity in Libraries Conference in July.

What—no Muslim lesbians or other queer Muslim women?
(C) 150 Necromunda (Imaginary place) [Not Subd Geog] [sp2009009485]
550 BT Imaginary places
Soooo much more mainstream than Femmes! Various sources estimate that 10% of women are queer, and some men also claim femme identity. I wonder what population of the country plays Necromunda?
150 Operation Enduring Freedom, 2001- [sp2009009638]

450 UF ONE, 2001 (Operation Noble Eagle)
550 BT Air defenses—North America
550 BT Terrorism—North America—Prevention
The term Femme, along with Butch has been around since at least the 20th century, so why the rush for these 21st century concepts. I guess we see where Congress's priorities are: lots more warmongers than queer women legislators!
(C) 150 Power line bird strikes [May Subd Geog] [sp2005007492]
* 450 UF Bird collisions with power lines
This refers to birds colliding with power lines. "Strikes" makes it sound like they're doing it on purpose. Damn terrorist birds!
(A) 150 Sacred space [May Subd Geog] [sp 88002572]
* 450 UF Sacred sites

680 Here are entered works on the events, metaphorically referred to as a "war," consisting of military operations, diplomatic activities, and other counterterrorist measures undertaken by the United States during the period from September 11, 2001 to the end of the administration of George W. Bush. Works on government antiterrorist measures and activities during earlier or later periods are entered under Terrorism Prevention.

Love those quotation marks around "war"! And also that they declared the War on Terrorism over. More on that:

POLICY AND STANDARDS DIVISION
SUMMARY OF DECISIONS, EDITORIAL MEETING NUMBER 50

War on Terrorism, 2001-2009
The heading for the War on Terrorism was revised to close the date span because the phrase was coined by the Bush Administration and is no longer in use by the government. The scope note now reads:
Here are entered works on the events, metaphorically referred to as a "war," consisting of military operations, diplomatic activities, and other counterterrorist measures undertaken by the United States during the period from September 11, 2001 to the end of the administration of George W. Bush. Works on government antiterrorist measures and activities during earlier or later periods are entered under Terrorism--Prevention.
Catalogers are reminded that the free-floating subdivisions valid for use under wars cannot be applied to the heading War on Terrorism, 2001-2009 (see the first paragraph of SHM H 1200).

I also am burned by the
I also am burned by the Canvassing is no more. Spent many of the Reagan years as a canvasser and canvas director. Tho we did have to register for a "Hawkers, Peddlers, Itinerant Merchants and Transient Vendors license" in one southern Illinois county, we were not door-to-door sales people.

"Mitigation" in the context
"Mitigation" in the context of climate change means a lot more than how it might sound in laypersons' terms. To scientists and policy wonks, it means trying to stop climate change or at least make it not so bad -- by doing things like drastically cutting our CO2 emissions from burning gasoline to drive cars.
(See, for example, http://www.ipcc.ch/ipccreports/ar4-wg3.htm )
The other option is "adaptation." This means assuming that there will be serious consequences from climate change due to greenhouse gases that have already been emitted or those we won't be able to stop in time and so we have to figure out how to adapt to it. An example of a mitigation measure would be building seawalls around lower Manhattan.
Many scientists now are saying we need to do both.
