Highlights from the January 2016 SACO editorial meeting and LCSH monthly list.
SACO, emphases theirs
Child Holocaust survivors
LCSH has no headings of the type [class of persons] Holocaust survivors. Many works have been written about women Holocaust survivors, children Holocaust survivors, etc., in the past eighty years. Works such as the one being cataloged here are provided with a fairly standard array of headings: Holocaust survivors; Jewish children in the Holocaust; World War, 1939-1945—Children; and Jewish children. The proposal was not approved.
I'm always irritated by The Holocaust = WWII holocaust, so I'm down with this rejection. Child holocaust survivors would be valid in my thesaurus, though.
Evidence-based education
Evidence-based practice is used in many disciplines, particularly in the social sciences and social work. It is a methodology for research. In the case of education, empirical evidence gathered in educational research is used to inform practices in the classroom.
LC has several titles about evidence-based education, and they are all cataloged as Education—Research and/or Education—Research—Methodology. This is in line with the ERIC Thesaurus, which has the descriptor Evidence Based Practice, categorized as Research and theory.
The meeting feels that assigning Education—Research—Methodology, combined as appropriate with other headings such as Education and state or Effective teaching, would be sufficient for the work being cataloged. The proposal was not approved.
I have to admit to a certain glee when buzzphrases du jour get shown the door by LC. Do they ever reject technology buzzphrases, I wonder?
Villains
The only supporting information provided is the title, which translates to “Heroes and villains.” LCSH contains several headings for Villains in [art, literature, etc.] but this proposal could be simply cataloging by title. Evidence should be provided that the work is about persons who practice villainy in general. If the heading is really needed, the cataloger should consider what the relationship between Villains and the existing headings Brigands and robbers; Thieves; Rogues and vagabonds, etc., should be. The proposal may be resubmitted.
"…persons who practice villainy in general." We need an all-purpose villain, a renaissance villain, even, if we're to approve this heading. In the meantime, stick with obvious synonyms like "brigands" and "rogues." Make 'em work for it, SACO!

There's no scope note, so I guess cache-sexes is a phrase everyone understands but me. Luckily the warrants help, "the term cache-sexe refers to clothing and objects used to cover male and female genitalia." Penis sheaths is a narrower term. How is Loincloths not a related term or use for?

It is disturbing that Library of Congress subject headings are my music culture reference point.

Is it weird that there isn't a Lesbian veterans heading to go with the others? I mean, even if the warrant doesn't reference lesbians, why not establish the heading? #AnarchyInTheLC
