Eric and I are hoping to adopt a cat and a kitten in the next few weeks. Until I can once get my hands on a furry little belly and worship a triangle nose, I'm occupying my kitty lust by coming up with names. I know we should wait and see what the animals are like before we name them, but I figure if people can determine their baby's name before they meet him/her, I can at least brainstorm some possibilities for our future felines.
Below is a list of the ideas we've come up with so far, and I hope y'all will comment on them and contribute some more.
- Macaroni & Meat
This is a meal Eric's mother used to prepare. He now makes a vegetarian version of it that apparently is much improved. - Zamboni
- Spike
- Limited
Our recently departed godlike angel cat's name was Partners, which was a joke about the company Eric worked for when he found Partners on Pitt St., so names like this one, "Company," "Inc.," etc. are all good. - Locura
madness in Spanish - Huelga
strike in Spanish - Caray
damn, and other things in Spanish, at least according to the translations on DVDs we watch - Noodles
- I don't care if it's a girl
Eric has a bias against any cat that isn't a giant male tabby, but one of the kittens we're considering is so beautiful, Eric is tempted to abandon his bigoted ways. - Mini
- Primavera
spring in Spanish. I love spring. - Verano
summer in Spanish. I love summer. - Loisaida
the Spanglish name of our neighborhood, in particular, Avenue C - Aloha
- Moyna
after Ellen Moynihan who adopted a stray who turned out to be pregnant - Moyni
same, but also after Colin Moynihan, Ellen's brother and Eric's close friend who forwarded the news about the seven kittens - Splat
Eric doesn't know this, but I came up with the name while reading a book about a witch detective who arms herself with a "splat gun" full of charms - Kosta Boda
the brand of candle holders sent to us from Sweden by a colleague of Eric's - Espresso kitty
I don't remember the why on this one. Must have to do with Eric's coffee addiction. - Barley
- Hops
- Kerberos
Be aware, Eric has a preference that the name be something he's not embarrassed to say to a vet, not that all of the above meet that criterion...
UPDATE 5/11--Here's another batch of potential names:
- Hostile Cabbage
there must have been a reason, but I have no idea what it was - Flap
- Montrose
the stop on the L train to get to the kitten's current house - Radish
- Sukanya
my sister's Indian name from the ashram when we were kids - Eep
- Anomoly
blame it on Star Trek Voyager - Sleestak
- Gozo
joy, en español - Farfel
- Krax
- Yonah Schimmel
- Niff
- Cahoots

Do you know where your cats
Do you know where your cats are coming from? i have a friend who just rescued a slew of kittens who were taped inside a box and left on the street on the lower east side. It was so sad. People are awful sometimes. Let me know if you'd like to meet them!
That said, OMG NOODLES! THAT IS SO CUTE! Mine are Roger and Clive, as I prefer stable human names for my animals, but I like cute object names for others. My coworker has a cat named Pockets, and that just about kills me every time.

Our future kitten is coming
Our future kitten is coming from an unwed mother of seven in Bushwick. But if any of your friend's lower east side abandoned strays are male gray tabbies, we might forego getting a more grown-up cat in favor of another kitten. What's the scoop? I'd probably like to meet them regardless, because ogling kittens is as enjoyable a past time as any.
I'm okay with human names, too, but Eric as a bias against them that I've heard from other childfree by choice men besides him. Pockets is pretty adorable. I'm looking for clever, but not too clever; cute, but not too cute; and not at odds with the cat's personality unless it's so at odds that it's funny, but that's kind of mean, don't you think?

i'm not sure the color of the kittens--i think they're orange? (Their father is orange.) Anyway, I'll email you ananya's information, and you can get in touch if you'd like to meet them. She lives on the lower east side, too, so it wouldn't be like a hike or anything...

My cats names are Sammy and Socrates.. I named Socrates, Sammy was given to him by the family. I love creative and fun names, it really brings out a different side in that cat. Especially considering that each cat has a unique personality.

To keep with the Latin theme
To keep with the Latin theme you've got going, how 'bout Chevere? That means "great" or "cool" in Mexico. And you can shorten it to "Che" which is an Argentine nickname (or you could say it's for Che Guevara).
Jonah has a whole book with photos of kittens but the names are too cutesy (e.g. Toffee & Taffy) to suggest...

Personally, I learn towards
Personally, I learn towards book characters. I have four cats, Gandalf (the gray tabby), Gimli, Hannibal and Dashiell. Someday, I want one I can name Hekate.
I like Splat, I've read those books too, and Kerberos. Sticking with Greek mythology, if it's a girl, you could try Kore or Dionysis if it's a boy.

Hahaha re: Splat!! Although
Hahaha re: Splat!! Although I think that might be dooming the cat to a bad end. Perhaps I am biased, though: when I was a kid we had a dog I named Smudgie (after a dog story I read) & when he got hit by a car all my friends referred to him as Smushie. :P
BTW I finished the last Harrison book last night. Meh. I agree w/you that mopey Rachel is less interesting. Also why does everything have to come down to children when there's a female protagonist? Maybe it's just the urban fantasy I've been reading, but it's still blah.
Also yay for new kitties!!!!

I know that you read my blog
I know that you read my blog and are familiar with how my recently departed TAZ got his name.
Back in the early 90s, my ex-girlfriend and I got this charcoal gray kitten which we named Socrates. I'm not sure if the cat is still alive or not, but he'd be around 18 now if he is alive. Socrates got his name when my girlfriend asked him to pick a name out of a book that she was reading. His paw fell on "Socrates" so that became his name.
My personal obsession with cat names is finding one that sounds good to a cat. They never seem to respond to their names when called, so I guess it doesn't matter what you call them. Was it T.S. Eliot or e.e. cummings who wrote about how cats have three names?
I really can't bring myself to even think about getting a new cat right now. It's still too soon after TAZ left me. I'm thinking that I'll get a new cat when I get my own place this summer, if the employment gods finally smile on me.

That's a great story about
That's a great story about Socrates!
I feel you about not being ready for a cat. It's been four months now since Partners left us, and we still worry that it's too soon. We're jonesing for the love of another feline, but we're also afraid that we'll have a hard time liking a cat that isn't Partners. Where to find an enormous affectionate grey tabby with an armpit fetish?!?
Like with all grief, it gets better, but it doesn't go away.
