Since as I've stated, I'm getting a little sick of LCSHWatch, I took Amanda's suggestion to solicit a guest contributor. As you'll see Carrie did a great job with Week 7, but I'm not sure my inner control freak will allow me to share my blog, even a little. Feedback, please!
Carrie:
(C) * 150 Bananas in popular culture [May Subd Geog] CHANGE GEOG [sp2006007645]
* 680 Here are entered works on the representation of bananas in popular culture.
Okay, so this is not a new heading, but the fact that LOC updated it so that it can subdivide geographically made it appear on the Week 7 list...and who could resist investigating further?? Literary warrant is from the catalog for "Tanz um die Banane" (http://www.tanz-um-die-banane.de/index1.html), a 2003 German art exhibit. I'm curious as to why the Univ. of Washington library submitted an update for this. Perhaps they are gearing up for the release of a book about Banana Phone? (n.b. "Bananas in Pajamas (Fictitious characters)" already is an authorized heading, otherwise we could have two potential uses for the "Bananas in popular culture" heading!)
150 Exiles [May Subd Geog] [sp 85046366]
* 680 Here are entered works on persons banished to foreign countries or remote locations by vested authority as a punitive measure. This heading may be subdivided geographically
to indicate the country of origin and/or the destination of the exiles. CANCEL
* 680 Here are entered works on persons who voluntarily or involuntarily depart from their own countries because of adverse conditions. Works on aliens who are expelled from a country are entered under Deportees.
* 680 This heading may be subdivided geographically to indicate the country of origin and/or the destination of the exiles.
* 681 Note under Deportees
Quite a change in the definition of "exiles" here...from being "banished" as a "punitive measure" to "voluntarily or involuntarily depart[ing]" from a country due to "adverse conditions." And deportees finally get recognized -- not like deportation isn't a practice that's been going on for hundreds of years now or anything. Glad to see that LOC just conveniently ignored that part of history for as long as possible.
(C) 150 Food festivals [May Subd Geog] [sp2010001706]
550 BT Festivals
Welcome to the catalog Food Festivals...you've arrived just in time for the annual Edible Book Festival celebrations.
(A) 150 Mixed methods research [May Subd Geog] [sp2010001158]
680 Here are entered works on research methodology that combines approaches used in both quantitative and qualitative research.
450 UF Mixed method research
450 UF Multimethodology (Research)
550 BT Research
LOC finally catches on to a research methodology that's been widely used and recognized in the social sciences for at least 15 years. Thanks, LOC, for validating the existence of our research methods by giving them a subject heading!
100 Obama family [Not Subd Geog] [sp2010001815]
Really LOC, it took you over a year after President Obama's inauguration to recognize the family as worthy of an authority record? I would think this one would have been a no-brainer, seeing as each of the Obamas already had their own authority record in the catalog (yes, that includes the kids!).
(C) 150 Salvation on television [Not Subd Geog] [sp2010001708]
550 BT Television
Far from being created for books about Pat Robertson or religious television, this heading takes its literary warrant from a book chapter about salvation as a theme in the anime series Haibane Renmei. Yes, salvation as portrayed in anime gets its own subject heading, but dozens of Sandy Berman's suggestions continue to be ignored by LOC. Really, wouldn't the "Religion on television" heading have sufficed for this instance?
Honorable Mentions from Week 7:
Aggressiveness in popular culture
Boring sponges
Containerless processing
Drugstore customers
Mormons in mass media
Psychoanalysis and television
Spiders in the Koran
Jenna again: Thank you Carrie!

Deportation has been an LC
Deportation has been an LC subject heading for decades. It's on hundreds of bib. records in the LC catalog. The year 85 in the control number sh 85037040 on the authority record for Deportation means probably that it was among the first group of MARC subject authority records to be converted from paper authority cards. The new heading for the class of persons Deportees was established to provide reference hierarchy for the heading Deported children that was proposed at the same time.

My favorite thing about
My favorite thing about BANANAS IN POPULAR CULTURE was the scope note, "Here are entered works on the representation of bananas in popular culture."
Dear LC, you're not supposed to use the thing you're defining in its definition. Love, all dictionaries.
