Y'all, how do you review your bestie's book? I loved Strange Birds, but writing about it feels weirdly personal. The basic scoop is that four twelve-year-old girls come together and have a super intense summer, a la Stephen King's Stand by Me, which Celia quotes in her epigraph.
Although I know Celia well, what surprised and delighted me is how overtly political Strange Birds is. The main plot circles around an animal/bird's rights issue, but throughout the middle grades novel the girls discuss race and class--and take action.
The book comes out September 3, 2019. Pre-order a copy from Women & Children First in Chicago, and Celia will sign it for you.
