Strangely, I don't remember having any powerful crushes as a kid. I had Teen Beat posters up on my walls, but I don't remember fantasizing about kissing or marrying any of the TB centerfolds. That's okay. A lot of people have that covered. Some of the chapters I noted, so you can see the range:
Brian Austin Green: Caroline Kepnes
Danny Saunders, as portrayed by Robby Benson: Shulem Deen
Kareen Abdul-Jabbar: Sam Weisman
Laura Petrie, as portrayed by Mary Tyler Moore: Larry Doyle "Laura was the original MILF."
Michael Jackson: Nicola Yoon,
River Phoenix: James Franco
Rivers Cuomo: Julia Pierpont
Tatum O'Neal: Jessica Anya Blau
I like that while many of the crushes described were romantic, others were friend crushes, or aspirational. One of my favorites of these was written by a young man who grew up Hasidic and was amazed to see his culture portrayed on the screen in The Chosen. I also loved The Chosen, the book, though.
The James Franco chapter on River Phoenix includes a self-aggrandizing poem, if you're into that sort of thing.
You're all over the place, James.
I was a River that flowed straigh
And pure; you're like a king
That orders one thing,
And then orders the opposite thing.
I shouldn't mock what is clearly meaningful to Franco, but...
