As I've said before, I'm growing weary of this LCSH game, and even caring about subject headings in general. I believe in the concept of controlled vocabulary, but I'm starting to come around to the idea that if no one uses them, they're not worth agonizing over, especially when LC/SACO have such different priorities than the library users I know. I'm supposed to do an LCSH show at ACRL in the spring, but I don't know if I'll be able to do so with any conviction.
Still and all, I do enjoy this game, plus Adam Schiff asked nicely, so I'll play a little while longer.
The Lower East Side Librarian Library of Congress Subject Headings of the month for Month 7, July 16, 2012 are:
150 Biometric identification--Law and legislation [May Subd Geog] [sp2012002431]
150 Biometry--Law and legislation [May Subd Geog] [sp2012002430]
Oh, Congress.
150 Electronic invoices [May Subd Geog] [sp2011006139]
450 UF E-invoices
550 BT Electronic records
550 BT Invoices
I can't look up the warrant on this because friggin' LC took their entire website down for Veterans' Day Weekend. Don't they know I catalog on weekends, and rely on a number of their tools, and that their Flickr account isn't going to help me identify indicators and subfield codes? Anyway, let's just consider the possibility that Electronic invoices isn't the hottest topic on congressional researchers' mind, perhaps it's even less in demand than topics such as femme identity, privilege and spoken word poetry.
150 Internet and activism [May Subd Geog] [sp2012002076]
450 UF Activism and the Internet
550 BT Social participation
Would it really be so hard to give a cross-reference to Hactivism?
150 Luminarias [May Subd Geog] [sp2012002239]
450 UF Farolitos
550 BT Holiday decorations
550 BT Paper lanterns

Oh, and today, I've prepared
Oh, and today, I've prepared a proposal for Spoken word poetry. I've done it as a separate proposal from Sound poetry, because it was clear after doing research that these are two very different genres. While both are intended for performance, sound poetry is focused on phonetic sounds and not on semantic meaning of words. Here's the scope note for sound poetry that I'm proposing:
Here are entered works on poetry intended primarily for performance in which the conventional hierarchy between sound sense and semantic sense is modulated and often reversed, and the phonetic aspects of human speech are foregrounded at the expense of more conventional semantic and syntactic values. Works on poetry written down but intended for performance, which tends to demonstrate a heavy use of rhythm, improvisation, free association, rhymes, rich poetic phrases, word play, and slang, are entered under Spoken word poetry.

You can see the authority
You can see the authority records in Classification Web if your library subscribes. It's not affected by site shutdowns at LC because it's hosted offsite on a contractor's server. Of course you can't see the associated bib. record if it's in LC's catalog and LC's site is shut down, but you can at least see the citation on the authority.
