The East Village's skankiest bar is collaborating with its neighborhood library, the Tompkins Square Park branch of NYPL on an art exhibit: "22 Years on Marz: A Retrospective of Artists from Marz Bar Since 1986."
The exhibit runs from Saturday, January 5 to Saturday, January 26, with an opening reception from 2-5 on the 5th.

Seriously, this bar is a D I V E. The last time I was there my friends and I ended up leaving when we couldn't order our next round because the bartender was in the bathroom either fucking or fighting with her boyfriend. We assumed the latter, as the former probably wouldn't have taken so long.
The service at Tompkins Square, a library I use regularly, is more reliable. I've never used their bathroom, though, so I don't know what goes on in there.

thanks for mentioning the
thanks for mentioning the Mars Bar on your blog. I've always said that once the Mars Bar closes, I have to re-evaluate inhabiting this neighborhood, and even New York, and I'm not even a drinker.
The collaboration last Jan made sense to me, as the Tompkins Square Branch is something like a dive branch corrollary of the the Mars Bar: tattered, a little smelly, with a bad bathroom (trust me) and a surly librarian, to boot.

just looking for the marz
just looking for the marz bar online to see if it still exists. was pleasantly surprised to find your article cause i've been telling everyone i know that's gone to manhattan in the last five years to go and find the place as it is a truly unique experience and one of my favourite bars in the city. - not one person has been able to find it,, or they've taken one look and decided to keep walking.
cheers
