The Lower East Side Librarian Library of Congress Subject Headings of the Week for Week 20, May 18, 2011 are:
(C) 150 Figure skating stories [Not Subd Geog] [sp2011002081]
450 UF Figure skating—Fiction
450 UF Figure skating—Juvenile fiction
550 BT Sports stories
This heading sent me on a search for a teen novel I thought was called Beautiful Girl, a romance about a teenage figure skater likely published in the 1970s. I searched WorldCat, Amazon, Alibris, and Scroogle to no avail. (But I'm not that patient.) Does anyone else remember this book? I found a Beautiful Girl from 1980 that I might have read, but it's not the cover I remember or the storyline.
150 Genocide (International law) [May Subd Geog] [sp2011002113]
053 KZ7180‑KZ7188
550 BT International crimes
Lots of (International law) headings this week.
(A) 150 Real Housewives television programs [sp2011002068]
680 This heading is used as a topical heading for works about Real Housewives television programs discussed collectively. When used as a topical heading it is subdivided by the appropriate geographic, topical, and/or form subdivisions.
680 Works on individual Real Housewives television programs or series are entered under the specific title, e.g. Real housewives of Atlanta.
550 BT Reality television programs
I guess some pop culture phenomena are more recognizable by LC than others.
* 150 Sexual attraction [May Subd Geog] ADD GEOG [sp 88004960]
I love things like this. Like, why could you not Subd Geog in the first place? Has something changed since the heading was established? Regardless, it's a fine heading, one I wish I'd thought to use when I was looking to describe a crush.

The Subject Headings Manual
The Subject Headings Manual says, "The Library's past practice was to authorize subject headings for geographic subdivision only when further subdivision by place was actually needed for works being cataloged." So back in the day, if the book for which the heading was first established had no particular geographic orientation, the heading was established with no decision on geographic subdivision. And in the case of Sexual attraction, no cataloger ever bothered (until now) to submit a proposal to add May Subd Geog when they encountered a book for which it was appropriate.
