My Radical Reference bud James Jacobs was good enough to post Sandy Berman's latest Personal LCSH Scorecard (meaning subject heading's he has proposed to the Library of Congress) to the Rad Ref site. The first part of the scorecard identifies headings that LC has adopted, and the second part lists headings yet to be accepted. I thought I'd second some of my favorites from the latter list...
- ALTERNATIVE PRESS (replacing or in addition to UNDERGROUND PRESS)
I really like the term "underground press," but it's really not the vernacular, and I think has come to mean something fairly different from "alternative press." "Underground" locates an item in a time period, which is a good thing. - ANARCHA-FEMINISM
I supprt this one for reasons previously stated. - BUTCH AND FEMME (LESBIANISM)
I'd like to add FEMMES (LESBIANS) on its own, too. A search on <femme? zines> in the Barnard/Columbia catalog currently yields 16 results, so I could put the SH to use immediately. - GENDERQUEER
TRANSGENDER PEOPLE, which was adopted in 2007, just doesn't cut it for people who do not live or perform one gender. A search on <genderqueer?> brings 18 results from our catalog, and not just zines. - FAT ACCEPTANCE MOVEMENT
I've addressed this one in past posts, too. - FREEGANISM
It's good enough for Wikipedia, MSNBC, and The New York Times, so why not LC? Perhaps Congress isn't interested in an "anti-consumerist lifestyle." - CLOSETED LESBIANS
This would be such a useful heading for...those who choose to remain nameless. Heh. - SEX WORKERS
Don't you agree this phrasing has a different flavor than PROSTITUTES? It also serves as a much better blanket term for professional activities including phone sex to stripping. Right now there are headings for TELEPHONE SEX and STRIPTEASE, but not for the people who do that work. - CRITICAL CATALOGING
SEE ALSO...this blog. - BEARDED WOMEN
I dedicate this request to the lovely and talented Jennifer Miller. - WORKING CLASS FICTION
I appreciate this heading because I'm guessing that proportionately few books (and members of Congress for that matter) come from the working class than middle and upper classes, therefore any tools to make them more visible will be welcome to readers, especially those of a similar background. Or just anyone who wants see a different point of view represented once in a while. - PUNK PARENTING
I dedicate this request to China Martens, the mama of mamazines and to all her zine descendents.
