Dear dog the pup on the cover is a cutie. I picked this ARC up at ALA because as a lifetime cat lady I'm finding myself dog curious. Down with binaries!
Warren's book is about training her dog, Solo, to be a cadaver dog--that is a dog that sniffs out non-survivors of trauma and foul play. What a specific and grisly job for a sweet pup! But Solo and the other cadaver dogs profiled like it. They like doing a good job and getting rewarded for it with a pull toy or hunk of jerky. And they're better at their work than machines are, thank you very much.
This is the kids' version of the 2013 adult bestseller of the same name. The puppy edition has lots of sidebars, illustrations, and photographs, that I guess keep a kid's attention (by distracting them!). I found the photos disappointing and the sidebars a little meh, but it's possible I wouldn't have made it through the nonfiction without them. It's for ages 8-12. I am a bad adult reader!
