Two flawed girls and one perfect boy are in a love triangle. Look a the cover! The boy is in the center of the triangle, but the "odd one out" is Jupiter, the lesbian to Coop's left, or maybe even Rae, the new kid to his right. Is "Odd One Out" a riff on the lesbian pulp novel "Odd Girl Out"? Surprisingly to me, the Beebo Brinker novel doesn't appear in my top 50 Google results. Because there was a 2005 Lifetime movie about a girl being bullied for having a crush on the same guy as a popular girl. I wonder which inspired Stone, if either. Both?
I liked this book just fine, found it compelling and all, but now that I'm writing about it, I'm realizing that it made me mad. I wanted a novel about polyamory instead of about a love triangle. I'm also sick of YA teenage boy love interests being so sensitive and noble.
