On the Ground: an Illustrated History of the Sixties Underground Press in the U.S.

I probably shouldn't take full credit for reading this one. Basically I looked at the pictures and read only the stuff from the 3 women (vs. 22 men) with interviews in this oral history.

One takeaway I got from the book, from Paul Buhle's preface, is that the sixties underground press was strongly identified with smoking weed. Like that was a huge part of people's' cultural identity at the time, which is something I don't see remotely in zines. Interesting! I read this book in preparation for a talk I'm giving at the Caxton Club in April, based on my book chapter Pinko vs. Punk: a Generational Comparison of Alternative Press Publications and Zines. I'm supposed to be writing that talk right now, as a matter of fact...
