This book is hard on Palestinian culture--in Palestine and in Brooklyn. The men are violent drunks, and women weaponize their victimhood by passing it on to the next generation. I feel conflicted about a novel championed by an ex-president's daughter that positions Palestinians as backwards and repressive, even if it is about self-liberation. The brutality is relentless.
