Rowell's first book is an adult romance novel. Yeah, a romance novel (set in Iowa), but for a geek set. Since I don't read many romance novels, outside of paranormal fiction, I don't know what they're like, but can they possibly be as smart and funny as this?
About half the novel is email transcripts between two newspaper staffers. This exchange shows you Rowell's sense of humor:
And her descriptive powers:
The premise is that an IT security guy falls in love with a movie critic whose emails get flagged for review. But Lincoln isn't a jerk. He's in fact a little too perfect, except for being immature. The 28-year-old lives with his mom and still isn't over his high school girlfriend.
Beth isn't much better. She's living with the ridiculously sexy, but also immature lead guitarist she's been dating since college. How will they overcome the obstacles keeping them apart?!?
Honestly, I didn't really care. I was just happy to be in their world for 300+ pages. I'm sad Rowell's next novel doesn't come out until July 2014.
