Tariq, a Black teen in a hoodie and maybe a gang-colored do-rag is killed by a white man who is not indicted, if you can imagine such a thing. The tale of the shooting is shared in a dozen-ish voices, most of whom were eyewitnesses. Some saw a gun in Tariq's hand, others saw a Snickers bar. They are all certain of what they saw. The story unfolds from "the incident" as it's called in the table of contents, to day 9, when those who loved Tariq best come together to bury a secret piece of him. That's when you realize that no matter who was right about the circumstances of The Incident and whether or not Tariq was in a gang, whether or not he was a sweet kid or an asshole, he was just himself. One human.
