Claudia is disappointed when her bestie Monday doesn't write to her while Claudia is away over the summer. And baffled when Monday isn't around for her return, nor when school started up again. Of course as it turns out, there's more to Monday's life than Claudia knows. Monday lives in the projects with her angry mother and siblings April, August, and Tuesday, while Claudia is an only child of middle class parents. Monday is Claudia's only friend. It turns out, Monday may need Claudia even more than Claudia needs Monday.
Monday is compelling, surprising, and heartbreaking, but having just read Allegedly, I was disappointed that they shared a similar surprise element.
Also, fuck the authorities who are supposed to take care of poor kids.
