Since I am so over-the-top in love with one of Kristin Hunter's other books, I thought I'd go back and read some of her earlier works. God Bless the Child is her first novel. It was a disappointment. I'm sure it has a powerful message for some, but the title character's self-destruction takes a form that makes me too uncomfortable to stand watching it. She's a spendthrift and debtor. Young Rosalie Fleming wants to please her Granny, a woman who worked most of her life for rich white folks and has come to admire them and despise her own people.
