I was soooo excited to see this new Kim Harrison book listed in the NYPL catalog. I didn't realize when I placed my hold it was YA, which is normally even more appealing to me. Once Dead, Twice Shy is more or less a dead girl coming of age story.
Madison Avery was ostensibly killed in a prom night car accident that is chronicled in Harrison's short story in Prom Nights from Hell, which unfortunately I haven't read. Once Dead refers often to the events of the story, "Madison Avery and the Dim Reaper," and I really wished I'd read it first.
This Madison Avery series introduces some new types of supes: reapers and timekeepers. There is also a fairy. I don't recall if we meet any of those in Harrison's Hollows series, but her partner Tink, a pixie, refers to them regularly with great disdain. It is an enjoyable read, but feels like it's mostly groundwork for the rest of the series to come. Harrison does a good job speaking to a young adult audience, I think.
