This novel about 19-year-old corps de ballet dancer Hannah Ward reminded me a little of the nun memoir Through the Narrow Gate because it was about the protagonist's struggle with the sacrifices required to please her god, in this case the artistic director of the "Manhattan Ballet."
It's a decently written dance novel, so of course I loved it. Flack is a former dancer and so is able to reveal the inner life of a ballet dancer and the outer world she lives in with grace and grit. I liked this description of Hannah's corps frenemy, who grew up filthy rich on Park Avenue, "Zoe fit in perfectly there: Even her upturned nose and pronounced cheekbones seemed like evidence of a genetic predisposition for wealth." I inhaled this book in a day, while on vacation in San Francisco, cuz I am an awesome tourist like that.
