It is the rare piece of literary fiction that I can get through these days, but I sailed through The Ghost Bride. It's literary, also historical and magical. The story takes place in 19th century Malaysia and in heavenly realms.
Motherless 18-year-old Li Lan is dealing with an opium-addled dad, an entitled ghost would-be bridegroom, other venal dead people, financial straits, uncertainty about the man she really likes and demons. I was surprised and not all that thrilled by the ending, but the value of this novel is in the telling, so I don't mind.
