Protagonist Mei is a 17-year-old freshman at MIT, where she's pre-med, even though she's a germaphobe. Mei's Taiwanese-American parents are Olympic-level immigrant guilters. Mei has pathologized the sacrifices they have made for her, which is basically the only acceptable way for her to be, especially since her brother Xing was disowned for dating a girl with endometriosis, e.g., potentially infertile.
Mei's struggle is believable, and you suffer for her (and maybe her mom, too) as she rite of passages.
