I bought this issue of Fiyah, the Magazine of Black Speculative Fiction because my rad coworker Jen Brown contributed her novelette "While Dragons Claim the Sky." It's so cool to see your excelling colleagues excel in other realms, too. I love that when the hair issue of Fiyah released its call for submissions, Jen either had a coif mage tale ready to go, or teased one out lickety split.
The coif mage and protagonist Omani is coming into her own with her hair magic and impulsively follows a champion to battle as her hair and magic team. I couldn't make notes in the app I was using to read the issue, so I don't have any highlighted passages to share. I'll just say I was happily surprised by where the story went and warmed by the ending.
