Summoning, the

The girl is a necromancer--not the sexiest supernatural power to have, and kind of scary until you figure out what's what. After an incident at her performing arts high school, protagonist Chloe finds herself remanded to a group home for troubled teens.

The first in the Darkest Powers trilogy, The Summoning ends with a cliffhanger, which I find manipulative. It's not really a standalone book. Even so, it's a reasonable read. Maybe it didn't make a huge impression on me because I read it on a tablet computer, rather than on paper?
