I'm a long-time fan of Angelou's autobiographies and have read them all at least twice. I was familiar enough with them to be like "wha???" when the stories reprised those from the Caged Bird series. That's until I realized that the retelling was contextualized, and all the stories about Angelou's relationship with her mother, Vivian Baxter are refocused through that singular lens. It's a quick and satisfying read. Angelou and Baxter go through some hard times, but their love and confidence in themselves and each other, help them and the reader get through anything.
Their relationship is hard won, which makes the triump all the more satisfying.
