Thanks Kate Haas for telling me to read this graphic memoir about infertility. The comics are detailed and funny, and frequently feature the author’s cat Reuben.
Phoebe and her partner really love their cat; that’s normal for childfree folks and others. They also really love each other. Eric and I are the same way. Is that a childfree thing, too? Or are lots of couples still pretty gaga six years in? Regardless, I liked seeing them all moonie and silly with each other.
Image snagged from the Browse Inside application. Sadly my other favorites aren’t included.
There’s a section near the end where she’s needling her husband. “Hey--what was the name of the porn star you produced your sample to?” “...didn’t you stick around for the credits?” “Because if this cycle works, we can name our daughter after her.”
Jeff’s reactions to each of her questions and suggestions are variations of “I don’t want to talk about this.” It ends with her cracking herself up “HA HA HEE HAW HAH HA HEE!” and Jeff saying “Nice, sweetie. Really classy.”
I just loved that because I can see Eric and me having the exact same conversation. The memoir is relate-to-able, even if you’re not doing, or trying to do, the baby thing, maybe because Phoebe is very honest and real.
CATS: On practically every page.
