And of course like any decent organizers, at the end of the conference we did a go around where everyone said what they liked about the event and what could have made it better. And we set up some working groups to keep things going after the conference ended. I know it's morbid, but the term I learned to use for this exercise is post-mortem. Things I especially agree with in italics:
Liked
hybrid of con and uncon
excited about everything
variety of tactics to organize
no/low cost
thanks zapp, volunteers
flexibility of format to finish bookbinding
easy to register
level of intelligence
went smoothly, willingness and ability to ad-lib
no drama
planners worked well together
format let other people step up
hard to believe this was the first one because it went so smoothly
uncon didn't suck
ZAPP space itself
food
social, participatory nature
better than a typical professional conference (people excited about what they do for altruistic reasons)
people from different places
well documented
planning went well, planners helped/didn't get in the way
historic/important
everyone wearing glasses
nonlibrarian felt like she was able to keep up/get up to speed
could use this as a model for say zine distributors
zine librarian caucuses at other events
Think about for next time
shorter sessions and more of them
what makes something not a zine
more skillshares?
alternate locations for future conferences
should we have vendors next time?
bookbinding too short
wiki a little dodgy, sidebar navigation confusing
need more time before reading if we do that again
would have liked a reminder email a few days beforehand
equalizing labor--labor exchange since we're not paying
(we should send hugo house a letter lauding zapp)
a web interface that includes rss feeds
would liked to have seen more people here
webcast would have been nice
concerned that not all zine librarians are on the yahoogroup
could use a homestay coordinator, housing wasn't great on the wiki
separate tools for organizing vs. conference tool
more zine makers
work groups to be started (not necessarily led by)
code of ethics, cd policies, challenges: kelsey, emily, abby
union catalog, thesaurus, zinewiki: clint and lily
zine yearbook: clint
we make zines: milo and alycia
zine preservation, disaster preparedness standards: heather
central fund: jessi
next zine conference: jenna
