Here is a brief report back on the NY Art Book Fair Conference at which Alycia Sellie, Susan Thomas and I presented.
Susan gave an excellent overview of art zines and contrasted them with art books. Keep an eye out for her forthcoming article on the subject in Art Documentation.
But what really bowled me over was Alycia's zine like talk on "Why Libraries Should Create Zine or Alternative Press Collections." I say zinelike because while being informative, evocative, and convincing, it was also personal. And pretty. Please have a look at her slideshow.
As for my own presentation, note to self: just because you've given a talk several times before, doesn't mean you don't need to go over it ahead of time.
I didn't take in much of the fair, held at PS1 because I'm a big lame-o. But I did take part in a pre-panel lunch to which the panelists, moderators, and some others were invited by Printed Matter board president Phil Aarons at Manducatis Rustica. The vegan pizza was shockingly good. Everything was, including the conversation.
Thanks to Ryan Haley and Deirdre Lawrence for moderating the panel and inviting me to be part of it!
