The 20th Annual Independent and Small Press Book Fair will be Saturday, December 1st and Sunday, December 2nd, at the New York Center for Independent Publishing (an educational program of The General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen), at 20 West 44th Street in New York City. As always, it's free.
If you must buy stuff, especially in the context of certain winter holidays, at least spend your dough on small press materials--directly from the publisher, without a superstore or online vendor taking a cut.
I also recommend the programs. Along with Ayun Halliday, Lauren Jade Martin, and Eleanor Whitney, I did a talk there in 2005 or so on zines, and it was quite pleasant and well attended. We also had a table, funded by Ayun's publisher (thanks, Seal!), and we weren't even the only zinesters there.
I'm sort of tickled by the prospect of Arthur Nersesian and Tama Janowitz reading together (Saturday at 4), though of course I'm irritated with the NYCIP for censoring the former's title The Fuck Up on their website.
And I'm totally stoked by the next day's "Literary Trivia Quiz Smackdown: A Public Space vs. The New York Review of Books," also at 4. Unless it end up just a festival of useless information stored in the heads of privileged white folks.
btw In case anyone cares, I haven't been contributing to this blog much of late because I've just had too much going on at work, which makes me not even want to look at a computer when I'm at home.
