It's time once again to close some tabs, so here are some lovely links. They are in anti-chronological order to when I saved them.
Bushisms: The random wisdom of the president
The best one I got was, "You know, one of the hardest parts of my job is to connect Iraq to the war on terror." Said to Katie Couric on September 6, 2006. Though to be honest I think it's easy to make dumb mistakes like this. Speaking extemporaneously can be hard. I know some very bright people who say brilliant things that wouldn't read very well on a transcript. Yikes. I'm writing this, and I sound like an idiot. No wonder I'm sympathetic.
The League of Space Pirates is another silly answers generator kind of site, but the results are based on your name. My pirate name is Captain Jenna Freedman the Very Amusing which may or may not be accurate, but I'm here to tell you that they really nailed our cats Cabin Boy Farfel Froldmagen the Often Ubiquitous and Sub-lieutenant Bad Bad Leroy Brown Froldmagen the Oddly Curious. "Often ubiquitous" means the same thing as "always underfoot," right?
Per the December 15, 2008 issue of Library Journal's Stat Watch 8.3% of users of the Cuyahoga County Public Library are responsible for 61% of its circulation. That's going the 80/20 even better, eh? I wonder if I'm a "power user" at NYPL. I probably don't check out as many books as Siu Loong, but I'd bet I average two books per visit, with maybe 30 visits/year.
I have to admit that I didn't read through the whole Libraries are a Queer Issue, or, LGBT Politics Beyond Marriage post. I keep meaning to, but it's time to admit defeat. I got Emily to read it, and I'm publicizing it here, so I feel like I'm doing my share. I liked what I skimmed, though! (I'm a bad librarian, I know.)
I'm often looking for librarianship gender statistics, so it's nice to have some handy in the this Library Journal article, By Division, ALA's Gender Breakdown and Retirement Plans. Check out the whole survey, available from ALA via pdf. Why not htmlify the report, people?!?
The new OCLC logos from LibraryThing may be a little mean-spirited, but that's what makes them so funny. My favorite being this one:
I've been meaning to write something myself along the lines of We Love Open Source Software. No, You Can’t Have Our Code, but of course I wouldn't do it nearly so well, even if I ever got around to it. Basically I think many library trendies and administrators do not really get open source. Then again, as tools like Drupal get more popular, they attract more and more developers that don't really get open source either. Can nothing survive being "discovered"?
What's hotter than a library zine? NOTHING. So thank dog for Steve Lawson's Call for Rants, Manifestos, Articles, and Artwork for a zine. I'm psyched to contribute something. My first two thoughts were an ALA disorientation guide kind of thing or some librarian slash fiction.
When I first stared fooling around with the LIFE photo archive hosted by Google it didn't seem to have any metadata, i.e. the search sucked, but you could directory in pretty well. Now the search is working pretty well, too--or I'm choosing better terms. They provide related images and "labels." So yay.
Okay, I've got a dozen more, but I've got to stop now. It's 6:15 on a Friday night, and I have to leave work so I can assure that my neighbor's guinea pig gets fed.
