Highlights from the October 2014 SACO editorial meeting and LCSH monthly list
SACO, emphases theirs
Announcement:
Police brutality victims
The meeting does not wish to establish a separate heading for the victims of every crime. The work is adequately cataloged with the headings Victims of violent crimes—Biography and Police brutality. The proposal was not approved.
I don't think they're wrong, but I also don't see the harm in adding a SEE reference. For the record, I still hate the word "victims" instead of "survivors."
LCSH, emphases mine
150 Cultural property--Destruction and pillage [May Subd Geog] [sp2014002183]
450 UF Destruction of cultural property
550 BT Pillage
♥
150 Female circumcision (Islamic law) [May Subd Geog] [sp2014002111]
053 KBP3119.F45
550 BT Islamic law
No reference to Clitoridectomy? I'm not a fan of the Female circumcision heading. I think circumcision is deplorable, but removing the entire clitoris does not seem like merely a female version of the procedure done to people with penises.
150 Masturbation in motion pictures [Not Subd Geog] [sp2014001956] (A)
053 PN1995.9.M393
550 BT Motion pictures
150 Masturbation on television [Not Subd Geog] [sp2014001957] (A)
550 BT Television
Seeing these two LCSH made me realize how much teen girl zinesters like writing about masturbation. Isn't that interesting?
150 Rape in the military [May Subd Geog] [sp2014001862] (C)
450 UF Military rape
450 UF Soldier rape
550 BT Armed Forces
680 Here are entered works on rape when both the rapist and the victim are in the military.
So glad I live in a world where there is enough published material to warrant this heading.
150 Sexual minority youth in mass media [Not Subd Geog] [sp2014001989] (A)
550 BT Mass media
I also still don't love "Sexual minority" phrasing.
