Hectographed books
SHM H 202 sec. 2 states in part, "Thorough authority research demonstrating that the term selected for the proposed heading is the appropriate one must be done for all concepts that are new to the LC subject heading system and outside the scope of simple and obvious pattern situations." No research was documented for this proposal. The record should indicate reference sources consulted and the information found there. If sources were consulted without success, a 675 field should note that fact. The proposal should also record (in English) the definition that appears in the work being cataloged. The proposal may be resbumitted.
This was June, but somehow they foresaw that we'd be making hectograph prints at the Zine Librarians (un)Conference. Sneaky! I wonder why they felt the need to add the parenthetical (in English). I wonder if the proposal was submitted in Catalan or something.
North Korean refugees in literature
LCSH does not make a distinction between people from North Korea and those from South Korea; instead, the heading Koreans is assigned to works on either group. In addition, refugees from a specific country are assigned a heading of the type Refugees—[place]. Therefore, the topic being depicted in literature cannot be contained in a single heading. The meeting suggests that the existing headings Koreans in literature and Refugees in literature be post-coordinated with Korean fiction—21st century—History and criticism. The proposal was not approved.
What are the implications of LCSH not delineating between North and South Korea?!?
Railroad passengers
The concept of railroad passengers already exists in LCSH as the heading Railroads—Passenger traffic. The proposal was not approved.
I'm not sure that "Passenger traffic" is a very meaningful subdivision, or if it is that it seems to describe Railroad passengers. I've been using Railroad travel, which to me implies that it describes the experience form the passenger's point of view.

Just to recap, Airplanes are no longer related to the quaintly titled Flying-machines. Airplanes are now a subset of items under the category Flying-machines. Awesome.
