The Lower East Side Librarian Library of Congress Subject Headings of the month for Month 6, June 18, 2012 are:
I'm going to try to integrate or inform my coverage of new LCSH with the discussion published on the Tentative Monthly List from June 15, 2012. I'm finding the notes rather inadequate. I wonder if they'd bring me to DC once a month to take the minutes, which is something I'm pretty good at. Ask around.
This month in things that are broader and less specialized than butch and femme:
150 Baby bonnets [May Subd Geog] [sp2012001552] (C)
450 UF Bonnets, Baby
550 BT Infants' clothing
"Silver Dollar Tabor age 19 weeks" Western History/Genealogy Department, Denver Public Library

450 UF Toddlers' spoons
550 BT Infants' supplies
550 BT Spoons

Headings that annoy me just because I don't like them

150 Location-based services--Library applications [May Subd Geog] [sp2012001136] (A)
At least I can't claim that LC rushed to adopt this technology heading quickly. I first heard about QR codes in a library context in 2008.
Whose Bible?
150 Heroes in the Bible in art [Not Subd Geog] [sp2012001933] (A)
Headings that get a plus 1 from me

150 Menstrual cycle in art [Not Subd Geog] [sp2012001991] (C)

New genre/form terms

455 UF Raree shows (Motion pictures)

680 This heading is used as a genre/form heading for short films intended to be viewed through a small hole or magnifying glass.
They really see no need whatsoever to refer readers elsewhere for any other thing they might have been seeking when typing < peep shows > into a search box?

jenna, the tentative list is
jenna, the tentative list is simply a list of the proposals that were submitted. It's posted a month in advance of the editorial meeting so people can comment. It doesn't contain any discussion or notes.

Thanks, as always, for the clarification, Bill. So then where are there notes, if anywhere?

If the proposal is
If the proposal is approved--with out without changes--it appears on the approved monthly list ( http://classificationweb.net/approved-subjects/ ), usually without comment. If you're interested in what changes PSD made, you have to compare it with the tentative list (before the latter disappears).
If PSD doesn't approve the proposal, or asks that it be resubmitted with more work, it appears in the summary of decisions ( http://www.loc.gov/aba/pcc/saco/cpsoed/cpsoeditorial.html ) with a brief explanation. To make sense of the explanation you may have to refer back to the tentative list to see what in fact was being proposed.
If the proposal is withdrawn before the editorial meeting, by the person who submitted it, it just disappears. But if you're really interested, you can figure it out by carefully comparing the tentative and approved lists.
The specialists in PSD work frantically to produce even this degree of transparency. Like most of the rest of us they have fewer and fewer people responsible for more and more work.
