The Lower East Side Librarian Library of Congress Subject Headings of the Week for Week 2, January 12, 2011 are:
(C) 150 Belonging (Social psychology) [May Subd Geog] [sp2010015330]
450 UF Belongingness (Social psychology)
450 UF Connectedness (Social psychology)
450 UF Social belonging
450 UF Social connectedness
550 BT Social psychology
550 RT Social integration
This heading, proposed by University of Washington catalogers, has a bunch of dictionaries as its warrants, not a book or other work written (drawn, shot, recorded) exclusively or primarily about the topic. What makes one preemptive heading acceptable and not another, I wonder?
I found substantial butch and femme definitions in two different encyclopedias to which I have access. I'm sure if I were physically in my library I could cite a few more.
Femme. Jaime Hovey. Encyclopedia of Sex and Gender. Ed. Fedwa Malti-Douglas. Vol. 2. Detroit: Macmillan Reference USA, 2007. p543-544. Word Count: 1238.
Femmes and Butches. Evalie Horner. Encyclopedia of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgendered History in America. Ed. Marc Stein. Vol. 1. Detroit: Charles Scribner's Sons, 2004. p388-392. Word Count: 2833.
So, how about it LC? If we can define it, can we admit that it exists?
150 Immigrant youth [May Subd Geog] [sp2010015336]
550 BT Youth
Useful!
(A) 150 Irregular warfare [May Subd Geog] [sp2010013128]
053 U167.5.I8
680 Here are entered works on warfare between advesaries, at least one of whom is a non‑state actor seeking to undermine the established political authority through both indirect and conventional military means.
450 UF IW (Irregular warfare)
450 UF Unconventional warfare
550 BT War
550 RT Guerrilla warfare
Up the irregulars!
(A) 150 Mickey Mouse (Fictitious character) [Not Subd Geog] [sp 85084713]
* 450 UF Mickey Mouse (Fictitious character) in art [EARLIER FORM OF HEADING]
I'm surprised it's not Mickey MouseTM (Fictitious character).
(C) 150 Obviousness (Patent law) [May Subd Geog] [sp2010015470]
450 UF Non‑obviousness (Patent law)
550 BT Patent laws and legislation
Cue eye-rolling lawyer, going, "That is SO obvious!"
(A) 150 Psychic trauma in the theater [May Subd Geog] [sp2010015072]
550 BT Theater
Why "the theater"? I know this is how pretentious people refer to "theater" sometimes, though they'd spell it "theatre," and you could tell by their pronunciation, but does that mean LC should go along with them? And doesn't this really mean "drama," as in in plays a la "in literature"?
150 Runaway women in literature [Not Subd Geog] [sp2010015467]
The pattern for this is "Runaway teenagers in literature," so maybe it's not as insulting as it sounds.

The proposal for Belonging
The proposal for Belonging (Social psychology) wasn't preemptive. The UW proposed it to provide reference structure for School belonging (Social psychology), which they wanted to assign to a work called School belonging. The proposals were posted together on the tentative list at http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/wls11/tentative/twls1102.html . But as it turned out Belonging (Social psychology) was approved but School belonging (Social psychology) was not. They thought the UW should assign Belonging (Social psychology) to the work being cataloged, together with separate headings to bring out the school context. The explanation is in the summary of decisions at http://www.loc.gov/catdir/pcc/saco/cpsoed/psd-110112.html . You can see the citation for the work cat. in the proposal for School belonging (Social psychology) at http://authorities.loc.gov/ if you look soon before the proposal is deleted.
