At first I was very excited to know about the SACO Summary of Decisions from the Weekly Editorial Meeting postings (Thanks, Bill), but now I'm irritated that they don't keep up with the Weekly Headings lists. The week 48 listings have been posted, but the rationale is at least two weeks behind. Do I let my commentary lag as well, or not? I say not, so…
This week 47, November 25, 2009 on LCSH Watch:
(A) 150 American Dream—Religious aspects [sp2009009212]
Warrant is Radical: Take Back Your Faith from the American Dream. I gotta say it irks me when LC adopts headings based on not yet published books with sketchy blurbs like, "In Radical, David Platt invites you to encounter what Jesus actually said about being his disciple, and then obey what you have heard." What Jesus actually said? Puh-lease!
(C) 151 Brooklyn Queens Expressway (New York, N.Y.) [sp2009009200]
667 This heading is not valid for use as a geographic subdivision.
451 UF BQE (New York, N.Y.)
451 UF Brooklyn Queens Connecting Highway (New York, N.Y.)
550 BT Express highways—New York (State)
551 BT Interstate 278 (N.J. and N.Y.)
Brooklyn in da house, yo! From a Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh cataloger. BPL you got beat!
(C) 150 Cappuccino [May Subd Geog] [sp2009009175]
450 UF Cappachino
550 BT Cookery (Espresso)
150 Cookery (Espresso) [sp2009009549]
550 BT Cookery
550 RT Espresso
150 Espresso [May Subd Geog] [sp 91003016]
* 550 RT Cookery (Espresso)
Yup, still Cookery.
150 Islamic sects [May Subd Geog] [sp 85068480]
* 450 UF Sects, Islamic
* 450 UF Sects, Muslim
* 550 RT Islamic heresies
Are there Christian sects in the Library of Congress?, I wondered. Yes, as a matter of fact there are. The list of Narrower Terms is dizzying. (Scope note "Search also: names of individual sects, e.g. Catholic Church")
(C) 150 Latte art [May Subd Geog] [sp2009009176]
450 UF Café latte art
450 UF Caffe latte art
450 UF Caffelatte art
450 UF Coffee latte art
550 BT Decoration and ornament
Dedicated to The Villa Villekulla, whose photo I swiped without asking.
150 Pepper mills [May Subd Geog] [sp2009009219]
450 UF Grinders, Pepper
450 UF Mills, Pepper
450 UF Pepper grinders
550 BT Grinding machines
550 BT Kitchen utensils
I dedicate this listing to Columbia cataloger Kate Harcourt, who carries a pepper mill in her purse when she travels.
150 Punk rock music—Philosophy and aesthetics [sp2009009132]
450 UF Punk rock music—Aesthetics
You know that I love Punk rock subject headings! This one is for Screaming for Change: Articulating a Unifying Philosophy of Punk Rock by four men. But at least the authors are scholars and the blurb is weighty and makes clear why the new subject heading has been applied.
(A) 150 Yoda (Fictitious character : Lucas) [Not Subd Geog] [sp2009009265]
Warrant: The strange case of Origami Yoda, a children's book.

"... LC adopts headings
"... LC adopts headings based on not yet published books with sketchy blurbs ...":
LC establishes headings for not-yet-published works based on galleys submitted by publishers through the Cataloging in Publication (CIP) program. The minimum materials required for CIP are listed at http://cip.loc.gov/core2.html?sid=40946682 .
