Library of Congress Subject Headings Weekly List 40 (October 7, 2009)
This week on LCSH Watch:
(C) 150 African American women in higher education [May Subd Geog] [sp2009008012]
550 BT Education, Higher
This is one of those where it seems to me like once you have the form in place that any also already accepted phrasing should be automatically okay to use. e.g. AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN [IN LITERATURE] was already okay, as was [MINORITY WOMEN[ IN HIGHER EDUCATION. I'm not sure what the workflow for that would be, though. Any thoughts?
150 Butlers [May Subd Geog] [sp 85018367]
* 550 BT Domestics CANCEL
* 550 BT Household employees
BUTLERS, step out from behind your domestic servitude! DOMESTICS seems like a really offensive name for servants to me, but when I saw BUTLERS, and some of the other SHs with changed Broader Thans, I remembered that LCSH don't reflect only United States culture and terminology. The term is I think way less old world sounding in like the old world.
(C) 150 Child trafficking victims [May Subd Geog] [sp2009007907]
450 UF Child victims of human trafficking
450 UF Victims of child trafficking
550 BT Human trafficking victims
SURVIVORS, please!!! Seriously, LC. Can we please have SURVIVORS in addition to VICTIMS in our subject headings?
(C) 150 Female high school athletes [May Subd Geog] [sp2009006794]
550 BT High school athletes
550 BT Women athletes
I'm not sure I like the construction on this, but I also don't know what would be better. HIGH SCHOOL WOMEN ATHLETES? HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETE GIRLS? JOCK GIRLS? I see from the Authority Record that SACO thought about this, too:
670 __ |a WorldCat search, July 7, 2009 |b (many more results for "Female high school athletes" than for "Women high school athletes" in title search)
PS I wish the authority records had permanent URLs like LC's catalog records now do.
(C) 150 High school boys [May Subd Geog] [sp2005004075]
450 UF Boys
450 UF Boy high school students
450 UF Male high school students
550 BT High school students
(C) 150 High school girls [May Subd Geog] [sp2009006795]
450 UF Female high school students
550 BT Girls
550 BT High school students
I guess it's all about HIGH SCHOOL this week. I've been using HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS along with TEENAGE GIRLS. I'll switch to HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS, but will probably keep teenage in, because I think HIGH SCHOOL and TEENAGERS are different enough topics.
(C) 150 Junior high school athletes [May Subd Geog] [sp2009008267]
550 BT Athletes
JUNIOR HIGH, too! Thanks, though I suppose there should also be a FEMALE JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES?
(C) 150 Marriage in the Bible [sp2009008013]
Really? This is a new heading? And they're not designating which Bible? The warrant publication itself, Il matrimonio dei cristiani, seems pretty clear on that. Perhaps I'm not understanding the Italian as well as I think?
(C) 150 Pampered child syndrome [May Subd Geog] [sp2009008289]
450 UF Spoiled brat syndrome
450 UF Spoiled child syndrome
450 UF Spoilt brat syndrome
450 UF Spoilt child syndrome
550 BT Syndromes in children
This seems like a kind of loaded, child hating intolerant of ATTACHMENT PARENTING (should probably be an LCSH but isn't yet) term, though of course not as much as its cross references.
150 Socialist leadership [May Subd Geog] [sp2009008284]
053 HX518.L4
550 BT Leadership
Where's ANARCHIST LEADERSHIP? Just kidding.
(C) 150 Superhero comic books, strips, etc. [May Subd Geog] [sp2009008279]
450 UF Superheroes—Comic books, strips, etc.
550 BT Comic books, strips, etc.
This looks useful. Thanks, Cooperative Computer Services cataloger.

The other day, Our Esteemed
The other day, Our Esteemed President made a reference in a speech to "in the words of scripture" which somehow got N and I going about possible sources of scripture and trying to work the phrase into everything we said. I think that isn't what you mean though.
Also, I'd love to see someone writing about Anarchist Leadership. I always think of anarchy as "everyone is a leader" not "we have no leaders."
And, isn't there a difference between "pampered" and "attached"?

The Library of Congress
The Library of Congress tends to assuming white, male, Christian, etc. unless otherwise stated. They're getting better, so it sort of pisses me off all the more when they establish a new heading that is still in the old default.
On anarchist leadership, I'm not sure if everyone is a leader, but I'm fairly certain that no one is a follower!
There of course is a difference between pampered and attached, as of course there are bratty kids, but I still feel like this heading/movement/whatever comes from a place of hating kids for asserting themselves and parents who let them.
