Library of Congress Subject Headings Weekly Lists 40-44.
In which the Library of Congress welcomes BOY BANDS, EMOTIONAL MATURITY IN MEN, PREEMPTIVE ATTACK (MILITARY SCIENCE) and OUIJA BOARD.
(C) 150 Bisexuals' writings, English [May Subd Geog] [sp2008007441]
450 UF English bisexuals' writings
550 BT English literature
Let me be clear. I'm not especially looking for more BISEXUAL subject headings (not that they're not useful); what I really need is QUEERS (or QUEER PERSONS, if you want to be all LC about it). There are indeed folks who identify as bisexual, but as far as I can tell there is nothing for all of the people who identify as queer, pansexual, omnisexual, etc. At the Barnard Library Zine Collection, we probably have 100 zine authors (wild guess) who describe themselves as queer, but do not indicate whether they sleep with men, women, people of fluid gender, or all (or none) of the above. I don't know how to describe them, and GAYS just doesn't seem right for the grrrls in Barnard's collection.
(C) 150 Boy bands [May Subd Geog] [sp2008005239]
550 BT Male singers
550 BT Vocal groups
Can you believe it took so long for the Library of Congress to catalog an item in need of this heading? In case you're curious, the analogous heading for the ladies is GIRL GROUPS (MUSICAL GROUPS).
(C) 150 Buglers [May Subd Geog] [sp2005007301]
450 UF Bugle players
550 BT Brass instrument players
I included this mostly because the sound of it is funny to me. I bugle; she bugles; they bugled; we are all buglers.
(C) 150 Chickens in literature [Not Subd Geog] [sp2008006104]
That's CHICKENS IN LITERATURE, which is in addition to the existing CHICKENS--FICTION.
(C) 150 Children of sick parents [May Subd Geog] [sp2006001659]
550 BT Sick parents
Good one. Thanks, University of Virginia (which I identified by looking up the ViU code from the 040 field, fellow non-catalogers) for suggesting it, but damn, 42 years after Children of Sick Parents; An Environmental and Psychiatric Study was published.
(A) 150 Common sense—Religious aspects—Baptists, [Catholic Church, etc.]
[sp2008007325]
COMMON SENSE, used for HORSE SENSE, see also KNOWLEDGE, THEORY OF (and others), was established by LC in 1986, in case you were wondering, like I was.
150 Cycling accidents [May Subd Geog] [sp 93010046]
* 450 UF Bicycle accidents
* 450 UF Bicycles—Accidents [EARLIER FORM OF HEADING]
How about a see also for CELLULAR TELEPHONES AND TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS? (But only because there is no SH for SUBURBAN ASSHOLES [or cops] IN THEIR SUVS YAKKING ON THEIR CELL PHONES ABOUT NOTHING OF IMPORTANCE.)
(A) 150 Democratic donkey (Symbolic character) [Not Subd Geog] [sp2008006763]
450 UF Democratic Party donkey (Symbolic character)
550 BT Donkeys—Symbolic aspects
550 BT Signs and symbols—United States
550 RT Symbolism in politics—United States
Seriously, they couldn't come up with one ASS cross reference?
(C) 150 Emotional maturity in men [May Subd Geog] [sp2008007184]
550 BT Men—Psychology
Also from the University of Virginia. Based on Men to Boy: The Making of Modern Immaturity. Awesome.
(C) 150 Nü shu [May Subd Geog] [sp2007004708]
450 UF Nüshu
550 BT Chinese language—China—Writing
550 BT Women—China—Language
Did you read Lisa See's excellent Snow Flower and the Secret Fan? That's where I first heard of NÜ SHU, but the warrant for this heading turns out to be the 1999 (non-umlauted) video Nu Shu a Hidden Language of Women in China.
(C) 150 Ouija Board (Race horse) [Not Subd Geog] [sp2008007295]
550 BT Horses
(This one is for you, Emily!)
150 Preemptive attack (Military science) [sp 85106260]
* 450 UF Anticipatory self defense (Military science)
* 450 UF Preemption (Military science)
* 450 UF Preemptive strikes (Military science)
* 450 UF Preemptive warfare
I see they're calling it "military science," not "military intelligent design." Cuz I thought God and Google are the only ones who can call for preemptive attacks. ANTICIPATORY SELF-DEFENSE is also a gem, btw.

Emotional maturity in men
Emotional maturity in men and boy bands appearing on each others heels does crack me up.
