Here are organizations that I donated money to this year. Some of them even got my time, as well!
ABC No Rio
I always like to support ABC No Rio. They have a zine library, my spouse is on the board, and it's in my neighborhood, so it truly feels like my community space. Of course the whole "culture of opposition" thing makes it extra sexy.
Adalah-NY
"The New York Campaign for the Boycott of Israel is a grassroots strategic alliance of concerned organizations and individuals in New York, formed to demand an immediate, unconditional, and permanent end to U.S. and U.S.-sponsored Israeli aggression in the Middle East. In response to the continuing injustices committed by the U.S. and Israel, which constitute gross violations of international law, Adalah-NY stands with the people of the Middle East in their demands for justice, equality, democracy, and respect for human rights."
AIDS Walk
I can't remember who I sponsored. :(
Alzheimer's Association
In memory of my mother-in-law, Pearl Goldhagen, who was released from the disease this past March.
Anchor Archive Zine Library/Roberts Street Social Centre
This is a wonderful zine library (with great cataloging!) and activist center in Halifax, Nova Scotia. I know a bunch of people who have participated in their clever residency program. I donated when they were threatened with eviction last spring.
(My friend Megan Gendell's residency culmination)
Books Through Bars, NYC
You know you come from a place of privilege where the thing that scares you most about the idea of being imprisoned is having nothing to read.
Critical Resistance
"Critical Resistance seeks to build an international movement to end the prison industrial complex (PIC) by challenging the belief that caging and controlling people makes us safe. We believe that basic necessities such as food, shelter, and freedom are what really make our communities secure. As such, our work is part of global struggles against inequality and powerlessness. The success of the movement requires that it reflect communities most affected by the PIC. Because we seek to abolish the PIC, we cannot support any work that extends its life or scope."
Denver Zine Library
You probably got that I like to support independent zine libraries by now. The thing I most admire about this one is that they went on hiatus and came back.
Good Old Lower East Side
"GOLES is a neighborhood housing and preservation organization that has served the Lower East Side of Manhattan since 1977. Through our direct services, we serve over 2,000 families each year, and thousands more through our organizing and training and education work. We work locally, city-wide, and nationally with our allies to build solidarity and collective power to fight against the issues that oppress us and to create the world we want to see."
Donated in memory of Carmen Rubio, who was Eric's guardian angel. Carmen died a few days after attending our wedding.
The Illuminator
Mission: To smash the myths of the information industry and shine a light on the urgent issues of our time.
Interference Archive
Two of my favorite things are political activism and archives. Plus, the collective members are some of the smartest, nicest people I've ever worked with.
Leukemia & Lymphoma Society
My cousin Elene completed an ironman to benefit LLS, in memory of her brother. The least I could do was support her.
New York Abortion Access Fund
"The New York Abortion Access Fund supports anyone who is unable to pay fully for an abortion and is living in or travelling to New York State, by providing financial assistance and connections to other resources."
Planned Parenthood Health Center, Providence, RI
My sister Danna manages this center!!!
Running Down the Walls
5K run, walk, and bike ride to benefit U.S. political prisoners.
Vermont Action for Political Prisoners and
the Prison Book Project of Western Massachusetts present:
The Third Annual
Connecticut River Running Down the Walls
A 5K run, walk, and bike ride to benefit U.S. political prisoners.
ZL(u)C Scholarship
Sometimes in order to facilitate diversity in your community, you have to put your money where your mouth is.
