I found a notice stuffed in my door when I arrived home from work on Friday evening that my landlord is changing the lock on the front door on Wednesday "to enhance security" and that the leaseholder only, bearing two photo IDs and a utility bill can pick up the new key on Monday or Tuesday between 3 and 5. Does that seem reasonable to you?
This is a faithful copy, though typed not scanned, of their letter:
521 E. 5th LLC
Memorandum
To: Tenants
From: Management
Date: September 5, 2008
Re: New! Door Key to Building
Please be advised that on Wednesday, September 10, 208 a new front door cylinder will be installed, in order to enhance security.
You may pick up your new key by coming to:
632 Broadway, 7th Floor
New York, NY 10012
Between Houston and Bleecker St.
You can come by the office between the hours of 3:00pm-5:00pm, Monday and Tuesday September 8-9, 2008. Please ask for Yessie or Teresa in the reception area.
To obtain your new key, you must bring 2 forms of picture ID as well as proof of address (ex. utility bill). You must be the leaseholder.
Please feel free to contact Yessie with any questions at (212) 228-9300 ext. 226.
Thank you,
The Management

My questions are:
- Can they force us to go there in just that narrow window, with almost no notice (I'd have to take a half day off work to get there during the designated hours)?
- Can they really demand 2 forms of ID? And if so, can they photocopy them?
- Can I send my spouse? He's not on the lease, but I'm pretty sure he's legal in that apartment, by virtue of our marriage.
- Can I demand the super bring the key to my apartment, at a time that is reasonable for both of us?
- Is my landlord an asshole, or what?
btw They switched the locks and gave us new keys within the past 2 or 3 years.

Maybe they are hoping that
Maybe they are hoping that this is too much of a hassle and so you will just decide to forgo all of it and never return. They wouldn't need to buy you out, and they'd get a furnished apartment and everyone is happy, right?!
